Tiered Instruction

Only when students work at appropriate challenge levels do they develop the essential habits of persistence, curiosity, and willingness to take intellectual risks.

How to Build Background Knowledge

Building World Knowledge: Motivating Children to Read and Enjoy

 Informational Text

Exposing young children to informational text early on can help them to handle the literacy demands of fourth grade and beyond. Three techniques described in this article — Text Impression, Guiding Questions, and the Retelling Pyramid — can help children become familiar with the language and structure of non-fiction books.

Summarizing Strategy

Summarizing teaches students how to discern the most important ideas in a text, how to ignore irrelevant information, and how to integrate the central ideas in a meaningful way. Teaching students to summarize improves their memory for what is read. Summarization strategies can be used in almost every content area.

Tiered instruction allows all students to focus on essential concepts and skills yet still be challenged at the different levels on which they are individually capable of working. Ideally, tiered learning tasks engage students slightly beyond what they find easy or comfortable in order to provide genuine challenge and to promote their continued learning.

The Best Places To Get The “Same” Text Written For Different “Levels”
Knewton. The company believes its new, free online tutoring platform will radically transform how teachers personalize instruction. Knewton claims to offer automated, digital tutoring that responds to each student's needs. "We can take the combined data power of millions of students — all the people who are just like you — [who] had to learn a particular concept before, that you have to learn today — to find the best pieces of content, proven most effective for people just like you, and give that to you every single time," he says.

Here's how it works: The platform presents video and a variety of written content and then asks multiple-choice questions. Based on student responses, and patterns of responses from other, similar students, the next piece of content is served up.

Knewton currently offers programs in math, biology and English language arts, mostly for middle school and high school grades. The company plans to expand soon with history and other curricula.
